Mortuary of Madness: A Tale of Horror
We had the exclusive privilege to review Jim O’Rear’s new book while visiting the Full Moon Tattoo and Horror Festival in Nashville. This was incredibly unexpected as he has kept this project very quiet. Being his first novel, we jumped at the chance. Only intending to skim through a few pages to see what I could be expecting, I read the entire book in about two hours.
An old family funeral home comes under the care of young William Ackerman after a freak accident kills his father. Having a long rumored family history of experimenting with re-animation, William is an outcast at school and is fittingly ridiculed. He and his girlfriend, Samantha, are ready to be free of their small town after graduation. They vow to marry, sell the funeral home and get away as soon as they can. However, a litany of tragedies changes their plans, but their love remains true.
Mortuary of Madness is an easy quick read, but don’t be fooled. O’Rear pulls the horror fan reader in with gore very quickly, and doesn’t let up. To add to the suspense, there are no page numbers, so once hooked the reader has some of the same suspense as if watching a movie. It almost reads like a movie, as if the screenplay has already been written! There are vivid details of the action and it is easy to get caught in the story. There are several dream sequences that are worked in so perfectly, that they seem part of the action.
In true O’Rear fashion, there is gratuitous sex, plenty of gore, and –yes- arse. Fans of Mr. O’Rear’s movies are sure to enjoy this little gem. It is currently available on Amazon for hard copy or Kindle (link below).
